AFCON 2025: Nigeria Overpowers Algeria to Book Semi-Final Spot
In a commanding performance in Marrakech, the Super Eagles delivered a statement win, beating Algeria 2-0 to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals for a record 17th time.
Despite entering the quarter-final clash on Saturday, January 10 with lingering questions about their form, Nigeria provided emphatic answers under the cloudy Moroccan sky. What was billed as a heavyweight showdown quickly became a showcase of Nigerian authority.
Second-half strikes from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealed the victory for the three-time champions, though the 2–0 scoreline barely captured the extent of their dominance. From start to finish, Nigeria played with clarity, purpose and conviction, controlling the tempo and tempo and dictating the flow of the game.
At final whistle, celebrations were measured rather than raucous. Coach Eric Chelle shared quiet embraces with his staff, while captain Osimhen greeted teammates with handshakes and shoulder hugs — a reflection of a squad grounded in focus and fully aware that there’s still work to be done.
"I'm very happy for the win, for the performance. Now we are in the semi-finals, we will go back and prepare and try to qualify for the final on Wednesday (14 January)," Osimhen said in his post-match interview.
With confidence high and belief growing, the Super Eagles now set their sights on the next challenge — and the ultimate prize.
