π¨ Tragedy in Lagos: Truck Accident Claims Lives of LASTMA Officer, Two Motorcyclists in Badagry
A dark cloud hung over Badagry, Lagos on Monday morning as a tragic road accident claimed the lives of a traffic officer and two commercial motorcyclists.
The heartbreaking incident occurred around 9 a.m. on February 23, 2026, at the ever-busy Badagry Roundabout. Eyewitnesses reported that a cement-laden truck, allegedly moving at high speed, lost control while approaching the junction. The vehicle veered off its lane and rammed into three unsuspecting victims.
Among those killed was an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who was actively managing traffic at the time of the crash. Two commercial motorcyclists waiting to pick up passengers were also fatally struck.
Emergency Response and Arrest
The accident caused massive gridlock in the area, prompting swift intervention from security and traffic agencies. Officials of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Federal Road Safety Corps were deployed to restore order and manage traffic.
Authorities confirmed that the truck driver was immediately apprehended and taken into custody at Badagry Police Station. The vehicle has been impounded for further investigation.
The FRSC Unit Commander in the area, Yusuf Sanni, attributed the crash to loss of control and advised motorists to avoid the affected route. He also confirmed that the victims’ remains were evacuated to a hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Police Officer of Badagry Police Station, CSP Folajimi Agosile, stated that the driver would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
As of the time of this report, LASTMA’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, indicated that an official statement would be released.
A Growing Concern
This tragic event comes just days after another fatal crash was reported at Ekoro Junction inward Abule-Egba, further raising concerns about road safety and reckless driving across Lagos.
Road safety advocates are once again calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, better vehicle maintenance, and responsible driving—especially for heavy-duty truck operators.
